The Misunderstanding Of Biblical Hebrew Words-The True Definitions
Many of the Hebrew word meanings in the Bible are misunderstood. What we think we know about a word may not be it's true meaning.
The Hebrew words and sentences are written from right to left.
In the Greek translations of the Bible it is apparent that they did not understand some words or could not express them in that language.
Yahshua's teachings were written in the book of Matthew which was originally written in Hebrew and was called "The Gospel Of Hebrews"
The English definition of words can also cause confusion of Hebrew words.
The meaning of Hebrew words are always based on something tangible. Something you can understand through the five senses. For instance "In God's loving care" would be described as "In God's bosom". Whereas Greek words are based on intangible, vague, and abstract ideas. Many of the Hebrew words have been translated using abstract words to define Hebrew physical words/ meanings.
Hebrew words all spring from root words. To understand the meaning of a word in Hebrew, you gain insight by looking at the root words.
Atonement
Let's look at the Hebrew word כפרה , said kaphar and that was translated as "atonement"
In everyday English, atonement means reparation for a wrong or injury and in religious terms means, repairing or making amends or expiation for sin. But not in Hebrew. Kapar means "cover over"
If we offend someone they can pretend that what we did is covered or hidden.
It doesn't repair the offense because if you offend them again they can uncover the offense. Atonement does not mean to erase or do away with.
Vain
In the command "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in "Vain". The Hebrew word translated as "vain" is שוא , said sheva and means, empty. Having no meaning, insincere. So, the word "false" is the true meaning of sheva. "Thou shalt not take the Lord's name falsely" or
"Thou shalt not speak or act in the name or character of Elohim falsely".
Don't describe or depict the nature of Elohim, falsely. It's like saying you live for God but you act in a character not of God.
Now you can see that the words take on a slightly different meaning than you were taught.
A List Of Other Words:
Image. The word for image is צלם, and said, tselem. As in,
Genesis 1:27
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
The word tselem does not mean we "look" like God because God is a spirit (Wind)
Tselem means "shadow'. Inside, we are a remnant or representation of Elohim.
We function like Elohim on a small scale. He placed within us a shadow of Himself
to act in the same manner.
Spirit. The Hebrew word רוח said ru'ahh, means wind. It is from the root word "rach"
which means "advised" or "recommended path". "Wind that follows a certain path". Spirit within a man describes his character. So he either follows the advised path or he doesn't. Elohim put into a man, the character or nature to follow the path given to him. It is the shadow of God.
The word for Holy Spirit is ru'ach.
Messiah ~ The Hebrew word Messiah meshi'ahh means to hold an office of authority, as a King or Priest.
{**Please note** I am explaining what is really being said in the English bible, and I am not declaring it as my beliefs. Some have accused me of being of the Messianic Jews religion, which I am not. I am simply explaining what it is suppose to mean.
If a person writes a murder-mystery book we certainly don't accuse that author of being a killer..so please don't accuse me of anything.}
Name. The Hebrew word, שם, said shem. does not mean "name" the way the English word means name. The word shem describes someone's character.
In English a name is just a word that lacks substance or reality.
In Hebrew titles and names both represent the character of a person.
The Hebrew name, יְשַׁעְיָהוּ, said, Yeshayahu, known to us as, Isaiah means
Yah is salvation. Isaiah was a prophet. So his title and name are both representations of his character. "He who declares or foretells, of Elohim's salvation".
If we ask the Father in Yahshua's name, we ask in the character of the name Yahshua.
Yahshua Ha Mashiach Nagid
Let's look at the name a little closer. Remember that the Hebrew language uses names and titles to describe someone's character or attributes.
Before Yahshua was born it was prophecied that he would be called Immanuel.
So Immanuel would become part of His character or it was known that He would be of this character.
Anytime you see El on the end of a title or name, it relays some kind of God attribute. Immanu-El. . The word אל is Hebrew for El=Eyl and means mighty one.
It also means the word "To".
Yahshua came in God's name, "Yah" and "Yahshua" means God is salvation.
The King (Messiah) lived his life as an example showing us that God's salvation is through the Kingdom of God in the flesh through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwelled in Yahshua from the time He was baptised which sanctified his body.
God showed us this truth by resurrecting Yahshua's spirit along with his flesh. Because he lived a pure life by God's word, his spirit was holy. After he was ascended his Spirit was sent to us to help us stay on the correct path. John 16:7
"Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you".
Matthew 26:61
And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
John 2:
19. Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
21. But he spake of the temple of his body
The Holy Spirit enters/Lites to comfort and bring to remembrance the things of God.
Yahshua was the first to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Therefore, God with us indwelling in Emmanuel.
Isaiah 11
1.A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,

Words are funny things they are nothing "they are easy like the wind"- Shakespeare and yet they can be so heavy defying physics and science alike. Also "It is impossible to speak in such a way that you cannot be misunderstood". ~Karl Popper, Unended Quest. How true that is yet not in the hub you just presented to us here. Well done- I understood it all (Ithink) well done... G-day
Thank you deborah for this little Hebrew lesson here.
It is always amazing to me how much you know on this, and very altruistic of you to take the time to share.

An interesting take on genesis, but more interesting is the fact that there are no female figures of God.
So how could male and female be a likeness of God?
Consider also that God according to Genesis thought that man was more important than women.
He created Adam from the dirt, yet he created Eve from a part of Adam.
If the female was an equal of male then both Adam and Eve would have been created in the same manner and from the same source.
my opinion ~:}
I would consider being created from another person better than coming from Dirt, but that's just my opinion:)This insistence on personifying God baffles me...Everything that has brought conviction to my spirit tells me God is Ineffable, any attempt to describe God in a physical manner is humanistic. How does one describe an epiphany,or a mystical experience,or a revelation in objective terms for others to understand!I love the education you have worked so hard for and freely share with the rest of us Deborah. It is unfortunate that contention follows you in the form of obsessed trolls!Thank you for your work and sharing nature.

You are so right when saying that Hebrew words from Old Testament can be easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. More even, sometimes Hebrew words are mistranslated for certain religious manipulations.
Well, this one was indeed flawless in factual presentation. Also both you & OpinionDuck are correct about what tselem means. Forerunner Commentary states: "There is absolutely no argument from [any Bible scholar] anywhere about the meaning of "image" here. There is nothing abstract." It further states, "...Hebrew tselem...means 'shape, resemblance, figure, shadow.' There is nothing abstract in it." Resemblance is the same as your choice in the word "look". 17 times tselem is used in the Hebrew Old Testament text. In every commentary I've read concerning it, they all conclude that we "look" like our Creator. The Bible reveals one of the most compelling signs to this issue. (Not going to list verse unless asked) But it tells God has hands, feet, eyes, nostrils, bosom, and a head. When it mentions these body parts it describes an action God is doing: using His hands to CREATE, using his feet to WALK among us, people did evil "in the SIGHT of the LORD", the Son had rested in the BOSOM of the Father, & a crown sits on His HEAD. A person can take them figuratively or literally. And just because He's spirit doesn't mean He resembles "wind", but rather INVISIBLE like wind until manifested physically. And what do we suppose He'd "look" like if visible...a dog, a goat, a cockroach, perhaps a flower! Remember every animal was made after their OWN kind. So who was man made after, umm, well, let's see...oh-oh-oh, the Bible says GOD! You nailed it, Deborah.
You see, I'm not against everything you write.:)
Excellent hub, Deborah. I've been looking for some of these explanations for many years (I knew I was right about God's image).
Hi Deborah
Perhaps you could extend your knowledge of linguistics to include ancient Egyptian - then you could evaluate, for instance, the accuracy of the Hebrew rendering of the ten commandments by comparison with the Egyptian original texts found in 'the book of the dead'.
Excellent information Deb! Keep spreading the truth. I don't know hebrew at all but when I read the bible the first time around for myself some things just didn't make sense. Now some of them do and thank you for this lesson.
Someone mentioned that there are no images of female as there is male. Those who think male is more superior and miss out on all the High Offices that Gpd has called onto women that are in that bible are missing one thing. Some have made claims that the male has the seed and so shall rule over women---BUT they are wrong. Without woman there would be nothing because there has to be both for life to be--in everything.
Thanks for the clarity of why and who women are here for. I wrote a hub about Women who held High Offices in the Bible and in it it is said that God called Deborah to do his ways. It was interesting research and maybe, after my eyes clear a bit, will continue to do other hubs of women that God used and called.
this helped me in my research, I am running into this a lot in my research
Cool hub,I enjoy reading it because of your great research into it.
Have you found the truth, am a christian, but still searching, . There is stuff missing.
Very Insightful. I am curious about your view on the New Testament. You seem comfortable referring to Y'shua not just as an historical figure, but as Mashiyach, yet you do not believe in the N.T.
Please do not perceive my inquiry as an attack...It is obvious you are very knowledgeable and i would like to here from you.
Blessings!
